"This building built in 1861 and restored in 1985, has always stood stately as one of the oldest buildings in town to service the people in the small community with general merchandise. Chesapeake City grew as a result of the man-dug Chesapeake and Delaware Canal that opened in 1829. As an important waterway for all ocean-going vessels, boats came from Philadelphia and Baltimore. J.M. Reed's store was noted for the finest wares that could be bought. The Foards and Lutzs, a family affair, who restored and now own the building subscribe to the same community service
